Course Description
The music portion of Introduction to the Arts covers the basic elements of music. We will explore genres, develop an ear for music, and describe the music to which we listen. Students will be able to identify standard musical instruments and musical styles by sight and sound. Once the basics are established, the course will emphasize the history of jazz music. We will explore the big band era, bebop, cool jazz and fusion, among others. Students will become familiar with famous jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Herbie Hancock.

Participation (10 points each)
Homework (10-20 points each) – *Late Policy* - 10% reduction per day
Tests/Quizzes (listening and written, varying points)

Educational Philosophy:
The Vianney Band Program promotes a faith and culture that illumines reality from the perspective of the Gospel. I teach about life through the subject of music. My goal as an educator is to equip my students with the skills to become their own educators, so that they may be successful in college and in life.

- Food, candy, gum or drinks other than water are not permitted in the Band Room
- Treat all property with respect at all times, including personal belongings, belongings of others and belongings of the school. If you break an instrument, you will be asked to replace it.
- Students are to treat everyone with respect at all times, both inside and outside of the classroom
